About
George Mathew Associates
A family practice founded on a simple belief: ordinary families deserve clear, protective strategies for preserving what they build and passing it forward.
Why George built the practice
As an immigrant, George Mathew understood the promise — and the pressure — of building a life from the ground up. Work hard. Buy a home. Educate your children. Help your parents. Put something aside. For families like his, progress was measured in responsibility, not display.
For many immigrant families, the savings account was the financial plan. It was familiar, visible, and trusted: earn carefully, spend cautiously, and leave whatever remained to the children. That discipline created stability, but savings alone were often asked to carry every purpose — emergency fund, retirement, illness, and inheritance. George did not see saving as a mistake. He saw it as the foundation, with protection planning as the missing second step. Where suitable, life insurance could complement those savings with a defined death benefit, while beneficiary and estate planning could make the intended transfer clearer.
He also saw the quiet middle-class trap. A family can do everything “right” and still spend most of its working life carrying a mortgage, taxes, rising living costs, tuition, and caregiving. There may be an income and a home, yet very little room for an illness, an early death, or a poorly planned estate. One setback can undo decades of careful work.
George founded this practice to help close that gap. He wanted insurance and estate-planning strategies to be clear, personal, and practical: protect the earning years, use contractual guarantees where suitable and available, and help ensure that assets reach the people they were meant to support.
The next generation should inherit choices, not burdens.
That was George's idea of generational wealth. Not instant riches, and never a claim that any strategy is entirely risk-free. It was the steady work of reducing avoidable risk so children and grandchildren could begin with a stronger foundation — and spend more of their lives building forward instead of starting over.
Carrying the work forward
George is no longer with us, but his purpose remains. Today, Selvin Mathew serves as the public-facing advisor, continuing the practice through clear conversations, written disclosure, and recommendations shaped around each family's circumstances. The name remains a tribute to the person who began the work, the immigrant experience that shaped it, and the families it was built to serve.
How we work
Small on purpose. You deal with the same person from the first conversation through the application and afterwards, rather than being handed down a chain. That constrains how many families we can take on, which we would rather admit than work around.
How we are paid
Before an application is signed, clients receive written disclosure explaining which insurers we represent, how we are compensated, and any actual or potential conflicts of interest. A copy is available on request.
Every life insurance agent in Ontario is licensed by FSRA, and the register is public. Look up licence #23219192 on FSRA Licensing Link. Do this for us and for anyone else you speak to.
